Safety
One of the key concerns in getting outdoors with kids is safety. Being prepared and staying informed is the biggest piece of this. Here are a few things to help you get started.
The Ten Essentials. First created by the Mountaineers, a Seattle based outdoors group, the Ten Essentials is a list to start with to be sure you are prepared to head into the wilderness. Know it. Memorize it. Carry it.
Cold Weather Safety. Basic knowledge of cold weather safety is important, but go the next step to understand how to prevent and respond to cold weather injury, as well as different symptoms in adults and children.
Warm Weather Safety. The same recommendations apply for hot weather outdoor activity as for cold: know the risks, and be prepared to identify and respond to any possible problems.
Water Safety. If you’re heading out to paddle, the most important thing to remember is that everyone should wear a PFD, or personal flotation device, properly fitted to each passenger. The CDC reminds us that in 2008, 3,330 people were injured, and more than 700 died, in boating incidents. Of those who drowned, 9 out of 10 were notwearing life jackets.
First aid and CPR. Available from your local Red Cross and a variety of other institutions, you should have this training for any activity you do with your child, indoors or out.
Wilderness First Aid. Consider getting your Wilderness First Aid certification, and eventually your Wilderness First Responder certification. Both are available in most areas with a quick internet search.
Communication. Know where your help will be coming from, and how you will reach help. Cell phones may not work in many remote areas. Satellite phones can be a good backup, and are available to rent before long trips.
Be sure to leave your itinerary with someone you trust, including when you are expected to return. Then head out and have fun!
